Frequently Asked Questions
What are the financial aid applications that I should be aware of?
All schools will require the Free Application for Federal SAtudent aid, most ofter referred to by its acronym, the FAFSA. The FAFSA determines who will qualify for state and federal aid, and most schools also use the FAFSA results to calculate wo will receive institutional money.
Created by the College Board, the CSS Profile, or College Scholarship Service Profile, is similar to the FAFSA in that filling it out may qualify you for certain types of financial aid for college. Unlike the FAFSA, however, which awards federal aid, the CSS Profile awards only nonfederal institutional aid.
What is an EFC?
The EFC, or Expected Family Contribution, is a figure determined through your FAFSA financial aid application, CSS profile, or other financial aid applications, which colleges use to work out how much financial aid you’re eligible for. It’s an estimated amount the student will be expected to pay to cover college costs, including tuition, books, supplies, accommodation, transport, and other study expenses.
In other words, the EFC is how much the federal government believes that your family can afford to contribute towards college costs. It’s also a baseline that can be used to determine financial need.
